You should have a
professional jeweler both clean and check the security of your
setting, while you watch, once a year. For general instructions on
how to clean and care for your colored gemstone jewelry, please keep
in mind the following recommendations for specific
gems:
Care
Emeralds may break if exposed to
extreme temperature changes. Avoid moving from a warm environment to
a cold environment quickly when wearing an emerald.
Rubies
and sapphires are second only to diamond in hardness, but since any gem is vulnerable, avoid rough treatment
and sharp blows, which can scratch or chip even the
toughest gem.
Cleaning
Some gemstones may have been
enhanced by heating, diffusion, oiling or irradiation. Heated and
irradiated stones generally do not require special cleaning methods.
If scrubbed too hard, diffused gems could become lighter. For
emeralds, the only cleaning method recommended is the use of a soft
cloth to gently rub off the dirt and buildup around the stone and in
the setting. Never use a harsh cleanser to clean your emerald. The
oil on it could be stripped away by cleaning, making it look
different. If this happens, take the emerald to your jeweler for
re-oiling.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions and
warnings before using ultrasonic cleaners. They are not recommended
for emeralds, pearls, opals, lapis lazuli, corals, tanzanite and
other gems. Also, avoid using an ultrasonic cleaner if your gemstone
has a serious crack or inclusion; the vibrations of these cleaners
can enlarge such flaws.
