Like diamonds, colored gemstone weight is measured in carats. One
carat equals 200 milligrams. However, the carat weight of a gemstone
is not an accurate gauge of its size. Some gemstones have higher
density (mass per unit volume) and are therefore heavier than other
stones of the same size. Two gems of the same carat weight may
appear to be different sizes. Because sapphires and rubies (both a
form of the mineral corundum) are denser than emeralds, a 1-carat
sapphire or ruby will be smaller than a 1-carat emerald. A ruby that
seems to be the same size as a diamond will have a different carat
weight, because a ruby is denser than a diamond.
As different
gemstones come from the mine in different sizes, their rarity at
certain sizes can affect their value. A gem that occurs naturally in
weights of 10 carats or more may be less valuable than one that
rarely occurs that large.
Gemstones can also be measured in
dimensions (diameter, length and width). Knowing the dimensions of
your gem, you can ensure that the gemstone weight will be visible
and well proportioned in the setting.
